Global Game Jam in Belgium

I was just informed today of Global Game Jam, an international event that brings together game developers around the world and asks them to create a video game in 48 hours.  There are apparently 131 locations in 37 countries around the world and one of those locations is Antwerp, Belgium.  So, I've decided to check it out and see what kind of ideas, people and hands-on work I encounter!  The website is www.globalgamejam.be and the GGJ takes place from 28-30 January 2011.

Video Games Have A Friend In Hellboy's Director

From Kotaku

FTW is a Win

Cory Doctorow's novel on MMORPG (massive multiplayer online role playing game) culture - more specifically gold famers and power levelers - is an excellent read!  Combining thrilling adventures both online and offline in places like Mumbai's Shadow City, Dharavi, and Shenzhen in Southern China, Mr Doctorow mashes macroeconomic and labor right concepts with the excitement of playing video games to make a living.  Though targeted at young adults, I learned more than a thing or two as themes such as the new and fast evolving concept of virtual economy, the power of numbers and true global gatherings through online games are concerned.

Given my love for online games and international relations I really got into this book.  In fact I often had a hard time putting it down since so many of the pages were filled with moments of real suspense!

I recommend picking it up and reading it, then pass it around and join the Webblies in their movement for just and fair... gaming!

EDIT: If you've got an hour, here is a good presentation from Cory at a bookstore in NYC http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TeQIMrYbJ6M

Temporary Penetrable Exhibition Space 5

Found this Banksy-esque notice in Brussels on a demolished building.  Only I couldn't find a phone number anywhere to try and book the venue.

Green Lasers!

Rainn Wilson just tweeted over the weekend, "Ok. seriously. It's 2010. Why are there no laser guns?!".

That got me thinking - hell yeah! We are actually advancing like the sci-fi- books say, with our handheld communication, location, information devices, cheaper travel, and now laser guns! (see the video bellow).

And, I might add, the color of the laser makes me think that someone (Martin Nodell) knew what they were talking about yet again.

Shout out to Playlogic!

The other day I was given the privilege of visiting the Playlogic studios in Breda.  Some really cool stuff going on there, which is not surprising since all the guys are passionate and talented.  Since I signed a disclaimer form I can't go into detail with what they showed me, but I can say...

Thanks again Olivier and the rest for giving me such an opportunity and a great time!

Horrible Blog

Excellent!  I heard about the Whedons' Internet short film, Dr Horrible's Sing-Along Blog a while ago and I finally got my hands on the DVD (only available in the US, so it had to be shipped by my dad). It's a really fun and clever ride I recommend to all!

Lost: the end

Yesterday my wife and I finally finished Lost.  It's been a long run with ups and downs, but we still recall the very early days of watching the series together in the dark and in suspense of what crazy adventures Jack and the rest of the survivors of Oceanic flight 815 would get on to.

File:Oceanic.svg
The beginning was great!  Trying to get off the island, finding the Others, etc. But then when a few finally got off and the time travelling started, things got a bit weird and some plot lines seemed to go nowhere.  But we stuck with it. And in the end, I'm not really sure how to feel.  The ending leaves me feeling both content and yet still yearning for more.  Ideas float around in my head of how things could have ended differently, but then I realise, that's just it.  Things can always go differently, but why bother worrying about what could have happened when you can think of what will happen and what did happen, and that is when I feel content with the story.

So many crazy things happened to these characters that anything could happen to them in the future!  And that, is also what brings the series home to me.  I see it as a very simplified idealised version of life in general, where anything can happen, no matter what you believe.  You don't know when it will end and why, and you might be very disappointed or fully content, but what is important are the people and experiences you gained along the way.  And, you know what, those people and experiences can even change!  Nothing is constant, just like the characters (and even the island) in the series. Most characters flip-flop from wanting to leave the island to wanting to stay and each time they make this conviction we can, eventually, understand their logic.  And this should be embraced and not seen as a weak storyline, since without accepting change (and knowing that change can come at any moment) we can not fully embrace the many sides of life.

We can all feel like we're lost on an uncharted island sometimes, with no goal but to get off the island and back to what we know.  But, we can also realise that once we manage to get off the island home might not be the same as it was, so much so that we might even want to get back to that uncharted island we so desperately wanted to leave in the first place. And that is because we grow and evolve as we experience new things and meet new people.  And this is the spice of life!  This is a gift we should embrace.

I recommend we all get lost every so often.

In the beginning

So, I just started this blog, well... now.  It is my intention to use this space in the vast sea we call the Internet to post my ideas, inspirations, achievements, etc.  It will be my rock (scogilo) in this sea to which I may cling and thrive and grow.
